What are the Intolerable Acts? Well the Intolerable Acts aren't just one act they are a series of 5 acts made to punish the Northern Colonies. Before we can explain the Intolerable Acts we need to find out why there was even a need for the Intolerable Acts.
The first real question we need to ask is why the Intolerable Acts were even needed? For starters there were a number of other taxes already imposed on the colonies. This made the colonist feel angry because they were not able to have a representative in parliament. So they started to hold protest and other demonstrations. Some examples can be The Boston Tea Party and The Boston Massacre. The important one out of these two that we need to focus on is The Boston Tea Party. The Boston Tea Party is when a group of colonist boarded British ships that were storing tea. Once the colonist boarded, they took over the ships then they dumped over 46 tons of tea into Boston Harbor. This was the tipping point between the colonist and Great Britten. King George had to do something to teach the colonist a lesson and recover 4 million dollars in today’s money of lost tea. He decided to setup 5 acts that would later to be know as the Intolerable Acts.
Now we know why the Intolerable Acts were established we need to know how each act impacted the colonies. The first act was a direct hit towed the city of Boston. This act was known as The Boston Port Act. The act banded all ships landing and sailing into and out of the Boston Port. The only way this ban would be lifted is if all the lost money for the Boston Tea Party would be paid back. This impacted Boston Greatly because no merchants could buy, sell and trade tea goods until all the lost tea was paid back. This meant income for almost all the citizens of Boston and there sounding areas. The next act is The Impartial Administration of Justice Act. This act meant if a colonist committed a crime the royal governor could move the trails to another colony or to England if he wanted to. Why is this a important? This is important because if I committed a crime shouldn't I be tried where the crime was committed. One example of this if I set fire to a factory in Boston. After the governor thought the trail would not be fare and decided to have me tried in Georgia. Once I got to Georgia the courts would have no idea about the crime or would they had even seen the crime scene. As you can see this would lead to an unfair judgment against the defendant. The next act is the Massachusetts Bay Regulating Act. This act made all law officers subject to appointment by the royal governor and banned all town meetings that didn't have approval of the royal governor. The main reason why this law made colonist angry was because it banned all town meetings. You might be wondering why does it matter to hold town meeting. Well back then this was a HUGE deal. In the eyes of the colonist this was their only chance to voice their concerns about their government. This act outraged the colonist and people were starting to get tired of their rights being taken away. After the revolution our founding fathers decided to put the right to assemble as one of our rights. They created this so no higher power could ever take the right to assembly away from us. The 4 act on our list is the Quartering Act. This act says a colonist must allowed royal troops to stay in houses or empty buildings if barracks were not available and this was at the owner’s expense. This act made people angry because colonist had to pay at their expense to house British soldiers. In a colonist eye it looked like they had to pay multiple taxes and now they had to house British Troops at there expense. What king George failed to realize when he made this act was that the colonist would be mad about paying out of pocket to house these troops. The 5 and final act was the Quebec Act. This act was designed to extend the boundaries of Quebec and guaranteed religious freedom to Catholic Canadians. In my opinion this act was a minor and didn't have an effect on the colonist. In more ways than one this act served as a strategic move by King George to made shore that Canada would not become a French colony. The last important fact you need to know about the Intolerable acts is that they didn't work. In more ways then one they angered the colonist and added more fuel to the fire. That is why I believe the Intolerable acts were the tipping point for war to break out.
