Land Lotteries And Land Fraud
After the revolutionary war Georgia wanted to compete with other states. In order to do so they had to distribute the land for dirt cheap. The first method was called the heard right system. Under this system each head of the house revived any where from 200 to 100 acres of land. Later on after the majority of land was distributed using the Head right system Georgia's General Assembly passed a bill allowing a purchase of land near the Mississippi river. Later on after this purchase private companies would bribe the governor the private companies to sell the land at much higher prices. After a while the word got out about the Fraud and the members of Georgia's General assembly were voted out of office. As a punishment all the land Georgia gained was took back from the federal government. Once the fraud was over Georgians government was left with a decision on how to dispute the rest of the land. There choice was to buy tickets and draw names out of drums to divide the land.
