Who is James Oglethorpe? James was a man who grew up in a wealthy family. During his time the United Kingdom was a facing an economic slump because of this there were many people who were let go form there job and could not pay there rent. These people were know as debtors. The reason debtors are so important is because Oglethorpe had a friend in prison who was in there because he could not pay what he owed. His friend later died in prison and that made Oglethorpe sad. So Oglethorpe decided to go to his King and as his permission for a charter. His reasons for settlement were to following
Charity, to help debtors work to get rid of there debt
Economics, to send good and spices back to England to make a profit
Defense, to act as a barrier between the Spanish in LaFlordia
After the king reviewed his reasoning he granted Oglethorpe a charter along with 20 other trusties for 21 years this was know know as Charter of 1732.
After the charter was made Oglethorpe bored the Ann and traveled to Charleston South Carolina. He stopped there first to resupply and then he went on to sail to what would be know as Georgia. Once he came to reasonable sight he deiced to call it Savannah. In order for his colony to get started he had to talk to a local group of Indians. There chief was called Tomochichi. The chief grew a great relationship with Oglethorpe because half Indian half British lady named Marry Musgrove. She served as a translator and a guide to the white settlers, Without there help there would have been no Georgia.
